A Quick Guide To Homemade Jewelry

Jewelry making is a wonderful opportunity for individuals to express their creativity in a manner unique to their own personality and vision. Part of the fun of jewelry-making is discovering the many natural and manufactured materials that can be incorporated into pieces, from feathers to charms to wooden beads. It is important to gather the right tools for your projects once you decide what you want to make, as you may need to thread beads, manipulate wires, or flatten metal. A beginner's jewelry-making kit, which can be purchased online, offers a good set of introductory tools for a variety of projects.

Often when people begin a new creative hobby they take their inspiration from existing works, but I urge new jewelry makers to explore all sorts of materials, shapes, sizes, and colors- there is no right or wrong, merely personal preference. Many items can be incorporated into jewelry, although beads and charms constructed from plastic, metal, stone, wood and other materials are quite common. These can be bought online or at local craft stores, and do not have to be expensive. Indeed, beginners may want to start with cheaper items as they get their feet wet in this new hobby. Some people like to make their own beads- a fun way to do this is to buy purchasing various colors and textures of polymer clay from an arts and crafts store and experimenting with size, shape and color combinations.

I also urge people to explore different applications for jewelry- you'd be surprised at the many uses for decorative, jeweled items. Most new jewelry makers jump right into making necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, but why not try making a keychain accessory? These make great, personalized gifts since just about everyone needs keys for something. If you or people you know like to read, you can make decorative pieces to add to a bookmark. Instead of a necklace, why not make a pretty chain that can be worn around the neck to hold glasses, a jump drive, identification card or other small item used at school or on the job? Hair pieces also make great gifts: a bejeweled barrette or tastefully decorated hair band are examples. Your home and car can also be accessorized- beaded tassels for lampshades, pull chains, door knobs and for the rearview mirror in the car are all unique ways to add a little flare to a space. If you enjoy hosting dinner parties, napkin rings are a nice way to accessorize your table. And why not make a variety of uniquely decorated jeweled bands to go around the base of wine glasses? These let people set their glasses down while mingling without having to worry about picking up the wrong glass later.

Don't ever be afraid to experiment with jewelry making. If you like this hobby and stick to it for a while, you may discover a particular style emerging, one which people come to identify as your particular aesthetic. If you find your jewelry receiving compliments, you may decide to sell your work. It is not difficult these days to sell jewelry online, but don't forget local shops; see who might be interested in carrying your items for a reasonable cut of your sales. But most of all, simply enjoy this wonderfully relaxing hobby, keeping in mind that if you don't like what you've created, you can always take it apart and start again!
